Medusa. Contemporary Playwriting in Europe

About Medusa

Contemporary Playwright and Inclusive Identities in Europe

MEDUSA is a European cooperation project that brings together cultural organisations from Italy, Germany, and Bulgaria to support contemporary dramaturgy and promote inclusive identities in today’s cultural landscape.

The project was created to encourage the circulation of new theatrical writing across Europe, with a particular focus on voices, perspectives, and narratives that are still underrepresented in mainstream cultural production. Through a shared international process of selection, translation, artistic exchange, and public presentation, MEDUSA aims to strengthen the role of theatre as a space for dialogue, diversity, and social reflection.

At the heart of the project is the belief that contemporary playwriting can help interpret the complexities of the present, opening new ways of understanding identity, gender, belonging, and representation in European societies. MEDUSA supports this process by creating opportunities for authors, cultural professionals, and audiences to engage with new texts and new perspectives across national and linguistic borders.

Over the course of the project, the partners will work together on the selection of plays, the translation of chosen texts, the organization of mini-festivals in the partner countries, and the development of shared tools, publications, and dissemination activities. In this way, MEDUSA seeks not only to promote contemporary playwrights, but also to build a transnational cultural space where inclusive stories can circulate more widely and meaningfully.

Funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, MEDUSA reflects a common commitment to cultural cooperation, artistic innovation, and the strengthening of European cultural diversity through theatre.
