Italy plays a central role in MEDUSA – Contemporary Playwriting and Inclusive Identities in Europe, bringing together project coordination, theatre production, cultural communication and academic research. The Italian partnership is composed of En Kai Pan, the project coordinator, Casa del Contemporaneo, beneficiary partner, and the University of Salerno, associated partner.
Together, these organisations connect cultural planning, performing arts, dramaturgical research, audience engagement and higher education. Their contribution is essential to ensure that MEDUSA develops as both a European cooperation project and a concrete artistic process rooted in the Italian theatre landscape.
En Kai Pan: Leading the European Partnership
Based in Naples, En Kai Pan is the leading partner and coordinator of MEDUSA. As a women-led socio-cultural cooperative, it brings strong expertise in cultural planning, project management, research, education and performing arts. Within the project, En Kai Pan is responsible for the overall strategic, administrative and financial coordination of the consortium.
Its role includes internal communication, monitoring, reporting, financial supervision and coordination with the European funding authority. As lead partner, En Kai Pan ensures that all activities are implemented according to the shared work plan, project timeline and quality standards.
At the same time, En Kai Pan contributes to the artistic and curatorial development of MEDUSA. Its experience in theatre research, dramaturgy and community-based cultural practices allows the project to connect management with artistic vision. This is particularly important for a project focused on contemporary playwriting, identity, gender equality and underrepresented voices.
Casa del Contemporaneo: Theatre Production and Public Engagement
Casa del Contemporaneo is a theatre production centre and non-profit organisation dedicated to performing, visual and stage arts. It operates through several venues, including Sala Assoli Moscato and Teatro dei Piccoli in Naples, Teatro Karol in Castellammare di Stabia and Teatro Ghirelli in Salerno.
Within MEDUSA, Casa del Contemporaneo brings theatrical infrastructure, production capacity and communication expertise. It supports the Italian public events and will contribute to the organisation of the final mini-festival in Naples, where the selected and translated plays will meet audiences, students, artists and cultural professionals.
Casa del Contemporaneo also plays an important role in communication and dissemination. Its internal press and communication team collaborates with En Kai Pan to support media relations, audience outreach and the visibility of the project across platforms and territories.
A Shared Cultural Hub in Naples
The relationship between En Kai Pan and Casa del Contemporaneo gives MEDUSA a strong Italian foundation. The two organisations share a long-term professional and organisational link in the field of performing arts, cultural innovation and community engagement in Naples.
This collaboration is not limited to the implementation of a single project. It is based on shared spaces, resources, artistic planning and strategic programming. In MEDUSA, this connection allows the Italian partnership to combine En Kai Pan’s coordination and project design expertise with Casa del Contemporaneo’s theatre infrastructure and communication capacity.
University of Salerno: Research and Student Engagement
The University of Salerno, through the Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences, contributes to the educational and research dimension of MEDUSA. Its involvement supports the connection between contemporary theatre practice, academic reflection and student participation.
Through the contribution of Professors Annamaria Sapienza and Aurora Egidio, the University of Salerno helps engage students in the project and supports the critical reflection on contemporary dramaturgy. This role is important because MEDUSA is not only addressed to theatre professionals, but also to young people and future cultural practitioners.
Italy as a Bridge Between Local Roots and European Circulation
The Italian partners contribute to MEDUSA by connecting local cultural practices in Southern Italy with a broader European dialogue. Through coordination, production, communication and research, Italy supports the full development of the project: from management and artistic reflection to public presentation and dissemination.
In this sense, the Italian partnership helps MEDUSA become a space where contemporary playwriting can circulate across countries, languages and audiences, while remaining connected to concrete territories and communities.
