Casa del Contemporaneo is a centre for theatrical production and a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of the performing and visual arts. It was established through the artistic synergy of Fondazione Salerno Contemporanea, Le Nuvole, and Compagnia Teatrale Enzo Moscato, with Teatri Uniti joining the partnership in 2022.
Its artistic vision is rooted in the idea of theatre as a shared experience, bringing together adults, teenagers, and children through productions that encourage dialogue across generations. This approach is reflected in its multidisciplinary programming and its strong commitment to contemporary artistic languages.
Casa del Contemporaneo carries out its activities mainly across four venues in Campania: Sala Assoli and Teatro dei Piccoli in Naples, Teatro Antonio Ghirelli in Salerno, and Teatro Karol in Castellammare di Stabia. Alongside theatre seasons and productions, it develops projects in collaboration with museums and cultural institutions, connecting performing arts, visual culture, education, and heritage.
Among its recent activities are the theatrical review “POMPEII. VOX FEMINAE. The Secret Words of Women”, the programme “Napoli. Storia Viva”, and cultural initiatives developed with important institutions across the Campania Region. Through this work, Casa del Contemporaneo promotes an idea of culture that is contemporary, accessible, and deeply connected to its territories and audiences.

Giovanni di Dio Petrone
Giovanni di Dio Petrone has worked in theatre for over forty years, building a career that moves fluidly between artistic practice, cultural leadership and institutional engagement. He began as an actor in 1985, working alongside some of the defining voices of the Neapolitan stage — Roberto De Simone, Michele Monetta and Francesco Silvestri. That early grounding in performance shaped everything that followed: a commitment to theatre not simply as an art form, but as a space for community, memory and transformation.

In 1990 he joined Le Nuvole, one of Italy’s leading organisations for theatre and young audiences, where he has served as Artistic Director, President and, today, member of the Board of Directors. Over the decades, he has conceived and curated a wide range of projects for Le Nuvole — from H2O Città d’Acqua, a theatre and science initiative, to Festa dell’arte, a festival dedicated to the children of Campania, and La Stanza Blu, developed at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples. He currently serves as President of Casa del Contemporaneo, a theatre production centre recognised by the Italian Ministry of Culture, and as President of ARTEC, the regional association for the performing arts in Campania. In 2000, he was invited to lecture at the Teatro alla Scala Foundation in Milan, contributing to a professional training programme for organisers in the performing arts and cultural heritage sectors.
His work consistently reaches beyond the stage. Together with Maria D’Ambrosio of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples, he co-conceived Materia Viva, a project connecting art, design and industrial heritage to illuminate the material culture of local territories. For Casa del Contemporaneo, he curated Un angolo di Napoli, dalle pagine di Benedetto Croce — a multidisciplinary series developed with the Italian Institute for Historical Studies, exploring the history and architecture of Naples through Croce’s writings, with contributions from directors, actors and scholars.
Most recently, in September 2025, he produced Pompeii. Vox feminae. Le parole segrete delle donne — a series of artistic performances set across the sites of Greater Pompeii, dedicated to the women of the ancient city. The production, a collaboration between Casa del Contemporaneo and Le Nuvole, was staged as part of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii’s ESOPOP: Stories in Festival and promoted by the Ministry of Culture’s Directorate General for Living Performance.

A ‘popular’ theatre that is a continuous search, that speaks to contemporary humanity using the tools of irony, metaphor, and poetry.”
